Robert Terence (Terry) Carter Obituary, Death – Robert Terence (Terry) Carter, a beloved founder of the Newmarket Historical Society, died away on December 18, 2023, leaving an everlasting impression on the town’s history. The society is in deep mourning over his death. Terry set out on an incredible adventure that spoke to his lifelong dream of becoming a journalist. He was born and raised in Newmarket. From 1968 to 1985, he oversaw The Newmarket Era as its editor, ushering in a period of unparalleled quality.

His leadership was instrumental in the success of The Newmarket Era, which went on to win prominent national community awards and become an integral part of the local story. As evidence of his commitment to preserving the town’s rich history, Terry was instrumental in 1974 in establishing the Newmarket Historical Society. His unfaltering dedication to the Society shone through in his many articles and other contributions, which appeared in the newsletter and newspaper.

“Stories of Newmarket,” “Newmarket: The Heart of York Region,” and “Newmarket’s War Dead in World I” and “Newmarket’s War Dead in World II,” two of Terry’s most recent and scholarly works, are among his literary legacies. Terry was a generous man who believed wholeheartedly in the importance of community welfare, in addition to his literary talents. He was well-liked and respected by everyone he met because of the countless hours he volunteered to improve Newmarket.

His unvarnished view of past events and his extensive knowledge of Newmarket’s past are unmatched. Everyone in Newmarket and our Society feels the impact of Terry’s death. Those who were lucky enough to have known him will always remember him as a great leader, historian, and compassionate friend. The loss of Terry will be profound, but his life and work will shine a light on the complex fabric of Newmarket’s past.
