Muscat, who spent one season as a Rangers player, is currently in charge of the Yokohama F Marinos in Japan, where he won the league title last season.

The 50-year-old previously had a five month spell in charge of Belgian side St Truiden in 2020, but was sacked after winning just two of his 14 matches in charge, having previously led Melbourne Victory to two league titles in his native Australia.

Muscat was 4/1 for the Ibrox job and third favourite at the start of the week, but the Sussex-born manager, who was a member of Rangers' domestic treble winning side under Alex McLeish in 2002-03, now looks likely to be named as the new Gers boss.

Previous Rangers boss Beale was appointed as manager in an attempt to close the gap between Rangers and their Old Firm rivals Celtic in Scotland and end the latter's near constant reign of dominance across the last decade or so.

The Englishman took charge of the club at the end of November last season with the club nine points behind their city rivals, who ended up winning an 11th league title in 12 seasons, finishing 13 points clear of Rangers in second and went on to win the domestic treble.

Beale was given his marching orders following their 3-1 defeat at home to Aberdeen at the at the start of the month, leaving Rangers seven points behind Celtic and even three points behind St Mirren, just seven games into the new season.

Rangers next manager odds (talkSPORT BET)

  • Kevin Muscat - 1/2
  • Philippe Clement - 6/4
  • John Eustace - 16/1
  • Steven Davis - 20/1
  • Derek McInnes - 20/1
  • Oliver Glasner - 25/1
  • Pascal Jansen - 25/1
  • Kjetil Knutsen - 25/1
  • Scott Parker - 25/1

Belgian manager Philippe Clement was odds on favourite for the role as recently as Tuesday, but has since seen his odds drift to 6/4 over the last 48 hours.

The 49-year-old has been out of a job since his sacking as Monaco manager in the summer after 18 months in charge following their sixth place finish in Ligue 1 last season having won just one of their last seven matches.

The former Coventry player previously enjoyed managerial success in his native Belgium, winning three consecutive league titles, one with Genk followed by two with Club Brugge between 2019 and 2021, prior to his appointment by Monaco in January 2022.

John Eustace had been joint-favourite for the role as recently as Tuesday morning, but his odds have now lengthened substantially to 16/1.

The Englishman had been in charge of Birmingham until he was relieved of his duties earlier in the week, despite the club being sixth in the Championship table and having won their last two matches.

The 43-year-old was appointed as Blues boss at the start of last season following a stint as assistant manager at Ireland and despite being the odds on favourites for relegation, managed to achieve a 17th-place finish and the club's joint-highest points tally since 2016.

Current Rangers caretaker manager Steven Davis is another name linked and has been priced at 20/1 to be announced as the new permanent boss with talkSPORT BET, as has another former Rangers player, current Kilmarnock manager Derek McInnes.

Kjetil Knutsen, the manager of Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt, who stole headlines a couple of seasons ago by beating Jose Mourinho's Roma side 6-1 en route to the Europa Conference League quarter finals, is priced at 25/1, as is AZ Alkmaar's English-Dutch manager Pascal Jansen.

Other potential candidates are priced with the same odds include Oliver Glasner, the Austrian manager who led Eintracht Frankfurt to the Europa League title in 2021, beating Rangers on penalties in the final, and former Bournemouth and Fulham boss Scott Parker.
