Taylor was born on 4 February 1959 in Williamsburg, Virginia. His parents are Clarence and Iris Taylor. He was the first of three sons born to the family. Taylor’s father worked as a dispatcher at Newport News while his mother was a school teacher.
Lawerence was originally very good with baseball which he played as a catcher but by the age of 15, he began to play football. After graduating from Lafayette High School in 1977, Taylor moved to the University of North Carolina where he became the team captain. His jersey number was 98. He first played as a defensive linesman then later as a linebacker. Taylor was drafted by New York Giants in the 1981 NFL Draft in the first round as the 2nd pick overall.
