GWS coach Adam Kingsley says important midfielder Harry Perryman will miss at least one week with a hamstring injury, joining two concussed stars on the sidelines.
Perryman was substituted early in the first quarter of the Giants’ stirring win over Adelaide, with the 24-year-old forced to look on alongside important duo Josh Kelly and Lachie Whitfield after the pair entered concussion protocols.
Kingsley said he expected the latter pair to be available for the Giants’ round 3 clash against Carlton.
The trio cover spades of territory for the Giants, with hard runners Cooper Hamilton and Ryan Angwin likely to enter the selection equation for round 2, along with halfback Josh Fahey, who is yet to debut.
“Whitfield and Kelly are ruled out with concussion, so that’s the 12-day protocols – they’ll be available the day before round 3, so I’ll expect to have them back for the Carlton game,” he told SEN Breakfast.
“Perryman will have a scan later (on Monday) with his hamstring … I don’t think it’s too severe but I don’t know. He won’t play next week – I’m not sure when he’ll be back.”
Late withdrawal Leek Aleer (quad strain) “may be available” next week after the minor setback, Kingsley said.
He praised the performance of Jacob Wehr, who returned to the ground after being sent for a head impact assessment following a brutal bump from Shane McAdam that is set to land the Crows forward in hot water with the MRO.
The 24-year-old, who played 11 games across halfback last year, impressed in a new role on the wing as he continued on to help the Giants to their 16-point victory.
“I’ve been super impressed with Jacob, to be quite fair I didn’t know a lot about him coming up here,” Kingsley said.
“I think he was the last pick in the draft three years ago, played wing and halfback and is a beautiful left-footer, uses the ball really well, runs really well and puts his head over the ball when he needs to.
“He’s slotted into that wing role for us really well. He certainly works hard on that outer side trying to work back and help our backs, and when he gets the chance to push forward he also finishes really well.”
Kingsley said the Giants would “move on pretty quickly” towards Sunday afternoon’s clash with West Coast in Perth despite taking positives from the 47-point turnaround in stifling 36C heat at Giants Stadium.
“It was certainly a brutal game. You could see it watching that last quarter, both teams were out on their feet,” he said.
“It was a courageous win, we’ll celebrate that and then move on pretty quickly.”
